June Issue 2008
The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in
Asheville, NC, Features Works by Connie Bostic
A dynamic exhibition of paintings by Connie
Bostic will be presented in the Pump Gallery, the street-level
space of the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in the Phil Mechanic
Studios building in Asheville, NC. The exhibit will be on view
from June 6 - 28, 2008.
Bostic's series of paintings have been in the making since the
winter following hurricane Katrina. "The devastating news
images from the aftermath of Katrina brought home the hardships
that third-world countries experience regularly; yet it was happening
right here in the United States of America. Those images just
wouldn't leave," says Bostic.
The exhibition is not gentle in its political overtones. The accompanying
text chronicles the agonizing period of time survivors endured
while waiting for help. "How could we have let this happen?"
asked the artist. And if you are one of a number of people who
continue to ask that question, this show is sure to remind you
of not only past humanitarian failings but also the justice-seeking
necessary to avoid future tragedies.
"I was in New Orleans many years ago and only for a few days.
But it was the richness of the culture that stayed with me, and
perhaps, played a part in my interest in describing what went
so horribly wrong," says Bostic.
Despite the tough subject matter, Bostic's painting is not preachy.
Be prepared to be moved by these eighteen paintings, and to be
lifted up emotionally, for this work is not academic, it is grounded
in the visual language of painting.
