Hawthorne Gallery in Winston-Salem,
NC, Features Works by John and Christina Sagartz
The Hawthorne Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is presenting an exhibition of works by John and Christina Sagartz, on view through July 12, 2008.
Husband and wife artists John and Christina Sagartz of Winston-Salem and St. Simons Island, GA, express their love for the landscape in their paintings. The exhibit features their pastels and oil paintings of the last two years. Having spent four years in Italy together, many of their images reference the Tuscan architecture, the farmlands and deep earth tones of Italian environs.
Formerly a veterinary pathologist, John Sagartz made a radical career change in the early nineties. He began to seriously study and practice fine art and landscape painting. He describes his career change as a spiritual experiment in which the results are still being realized. He claims that he is having a grand time!
He is especially drawn to Italian cityscapes with strong accents on architectural motifs in both oil and pastel media. The pastels are usually on hand made surfaces with concrete and sand added to create excessive textural quality.
John's work has received many awards, including Associated Artists national shows and most recently the Pastel Society of America exhibit in Youngstown, OH. His work is in many private and corporate collections. In 2007, Sagartz work was selected for the cover of Searching for Virginia Dare by Press 53.
Christina Sagartz followed a degree in business with a Masters of Fine Art in Painting from UNC-Greensboro. She has taught art at the university level and privately. Concentrating on landscapes painted in pastel media, she prefers to paint on site, en plein aire. Her small works reflect her fascination with the seasonal variations and the visual surprises of light and atmosphere. "I enjoy garden scenes and untamed landscapes, often finding my subjects by creeks, creams, marshes and wooded areas." Christina's paintings have frequently been juried into art exhibitions along the east coast.
Continuing in the gallery through June 14, 2008, is the exhibit, Urban Landscapes, featuring works by Cuban native Raul Montero, and New Photographs, featuring works by Winston-Salem fine art photographer George Schober.
