July Issue 2000
Three New Exhibitions At Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC
Jamie Davis, Robert Gardner, Shane Howell & King Thackston will have new works featured in an exhibition at Blue Spiral 1, in Asheville, NC, that opens July 7 and runs through Sept. 9. Concurrently Blue Spiral 1 presents The Southeastern Glass Invitational 2000. Also featured from July 1 - 31 is new work by Western North Carolina sculptor Hoss Haley.
South Carolina artist Jamie Davis combines natural and man-made materials to form sculptural assemblages. In this latest series, Atoms & Galaxies he explores relationships between objects and the notion of orbit.
Robert Gardner, of Asheville, incorporates steel and cast glass to create imaginative sculpture which draws on inherent charm of every-day objects. Gardner was one of four artists represented by Blue Spiral 1 at the recent International Exposition of Sculptural Objects and Functional Art (SOFA) in New York City, and his work has received acclaim around the country.
Making his debut at Blue Spiral 1, Shane Howell fashions wood and steel into handsome sculpture endowed with intrigue and mystery. Often carving wood to mimic a fabric cloaked object, Howell produces artwork which challenges the eye and shows the versatility of his media.
King Thackston, in his series, "The Deconstruction of American Icons," evaluates the attachment of the nation to its symbols and the confidence placed in these symbols to convey identity. Thackston's large, sepia pencil drawings depict a literal deconstruction both in the name of historic preservation and to spawn more modem icons.
Dedicated to presenting the finest Southeastern art, Blue Spiral 1 takes pride in organizing The Southeastern Glass Invitational 2000 which demonstrates one of our region's greatest strengths, magnificent studio glass.
Over twenty celebrated artists working with this dynamic medium will be participating. Selections will include blown, cast, fused, and lampworked glass, standing alone or combined with elements of steel, wood, and stone. Participating artists include: Valerie & Rick Beck, Kenneth Carder, Fiona Clark & Vincent DeLisle, Richard Eckerd, Shane Fero, David M. Goldhagen, Robert Levin, Harvey K. Littleton, Robert A. Mickelson, Steven Rolfe Powell, Sally Rogers, and Tommie Rush... And making their debut at Blue Spiral 1: Junichiro Baba, Mitchell Gaudet, Susan B. Gott, Cam Langley, Damon MacNaught, Gordon Park, Kenny Pieper, and Carl Powell.
These exhibits open during one of Asheville's City Center Art Walks. Over twenty downtown galleries and several restaurants participate in this event, which takes place the first Friday of each month (May-November).
Opening July 1 - 31, Blue Spiral 1 will feature an exhibition of new work by Western North Carolina sculptor Hoss Haley. This presentation will take place in Blue Spiral l's Showcase Gallery on the upper level.
Haley's solid constructions in forged steel and cast concrete are often architecturally based, mirroring actual buildings through form and materials. In his work, Haley serves as both designer and builder, first drafting his idea and then engineering the details to create the composition. The exhibit includes pieces to be hung on the wall and free-standing sculpture, for indoors as well as the garden.
Haley was one of four artists represented by Blue Spiral 1 at the recent International Exposition of Sculptural Objects and Functional Art (SOFA) in New York City. His work is in the permanent collection of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design (NC) and he has exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts (Santa Fe) and California Crafts Museum (San Francisco).
