Catawba Sunrise Gallery in Black Mountain, NC, Sees Red With Annual Exhibit

The first Invitational Vermilion Show will be on display from July 1 - Aug. 15, at Catawba Sunrise Gallery in Black Mountain, NC. Southeastern artists, hailing from as close as Western North Carolina to as far away as Alabama, will have works featured in the exhibit.

The timing of the show, scheduled to open at the height of Black Mountain's summer season on the 4th of July weekend, provided the impetus for a vibrant color theme. Drawing on her name, gallery owner RitaVermillion chose this way for artists to share a focus, while leaving the door open for creative possibilities in different mediums.

"The idea came because I wanted to do something new for the year 2000," explained Vermillion, who opened Catawba Sunrise Gallery in 1996. "All of our past shows featured individual artists. I wanted this show to be inclusive and allow more participants." The invitational show was opened to artists who are currently represented at the gallery.

Catawba Sunrise Gallery carries works of more than 100 artsts and fine craftsmen in glass, clay, wood, metal, fiber and paper, and jewelry.

"The show contrasts works from artists who create very delicate lampwork glass items alongside works from artists who paint large wall pieces. Some of the artists are focusing on a singular red item, such as a tomato, a cardinal, or Red Riding Hood, whereas others are focusing on innovation in design in their craft and incorporating vermilion as part of that. It gives me such satisfaction to see these very talented people get excited about this type of show," continues Vermillion.

Nancy Darrell, a longtime member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, who is well known for her porcelain pottery, will serve as jurist for the show. Darrell, who graduated from the University of Iowa's fine arts program, also studied at The Art Institute of Chicato and with the late Charles Counts of Rising Fawn, Georgia. Prizes will be awarded for Best of Show and Best of Category.
