Durham's Arts Council Features Works by Fleming Goolsby at Semans Gallery in Durham, NC
The Magic Island is the title of an exhibit of paintings by writer/artist, Fleming Goolsby that will hang in the Semans Gallery of the Durham Arts Council Building in Durham, NC, through Aug. 6, 2000.
The exhibit of oil paintings and drawings of The Magic Island are part of a story by the same title, written and illustrated by Fleming Goolsby. The artist/writer's work addresses themes of control, imagination, creativity and creative self-discovery. Fleming Goolsby is the chosen pen name for John Rhodes. Rhodes is a descendant of Goolsby, who was believed to have possessed supernatural powers throughout his life in the mid-eighteen hundreds while living in North Carolina.
Rhodes thinks art is vital in documenting the history of all societies and cultures. He also thinks art helps define what we are about, as nations and as individuals. Rhodes currently resides in North Carolina, works in the business office Division of Continuing Education, UNC-Chapel Hill, and is presently writing his work of fiction, The Magic Island.
