Arts & Science Council in Charlotte, NC, Sponsors Chairs to Benefit Charlotte Area High Schools

Tryon Center for Visual Arts' Chairs on Parade, a public art exhibition on view through Sept. 2001, will bring Charlotte, NC, business owners and artists from the Carolinas together in designing and producing rocking chairs. The Arts & Science Council (ASC) and ASC Public Art, Inc., have sponsored 14 chairs for Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students to design and execute with artistic themes. The exhibit is an example of how creative partnerships can flourish between the private sector, business leaders, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and our cultural system.

"The opportunity to sponsor chairs for students to create works of art was extremely appealing because it helps to support and develop future generations of creative talent and exposes students to the arts. The impact of this exhibit will reach deeply into the fabric of the community," says Harriet Sanford, president and CEO of the ASC.

ASC donated $4,200 to Tryon Center for Visual Art to purchase 14 chairs for the following high schools: Butler, East Mecklenburg, Grainger, Harding University, Independence, Maywood, Myers Park, North Mecklenburg, Olympic, Providence, South Mecklenburg, Vance, West Mecklenburg, and Northwest School of the Arts.

"This is another opportunity for the ASC to support a community-based effort to reach deep and wide across our community and to promote the benefits of public art," says Kevin Patterson, chair-elect of ASC Public Art, Inc.

Chairs on Parade will be placed on the streets, in malls, on plazas, at the airport, and in office buildings, parks, libraries and schools around Mecklenburg County.

The Arts & Science Council Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Inc. is a proactive, non-profit organization that provides planning, oversight and funding to organizations offering arts, science, history and cultural education to ensure a vibrant and culturally diverse community for the education of our children and the enjoyment of our residents. Additionally, the ASC provides grants through the Community Cultural Connections program, which supports neighborhood and community-based initiatives.
