Charleston Co. Library in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Eileen Blyth

The Saul Alexander Gallery at the Charleston County Public Library system's Main Branch in Charleston, SC, will feature works by Eileen Blyth, a Midlands area painter from July 1 through July 31, 2001.

The works on exhibit are from Blyth's Edisto Series of paintings, a body of work taken from observations along the coast at Edisto Beach, SC. Her paintings project a profound sense of shelter, delicacy, and intimacy-- all accomplished by a practiced and refined layering of paint in dry brush fashion, closely akin to the surface of frescoes. Blyth's use of strongly juxtaposed composition implies both interaction and distance, and invites the viewer to choose between being either within or outside of her forms and structures.

A founding member of the Osmosis Painters' Group, Blyth has been very active in the Midlands art scene, exhibiting with Osmosis for the last three years in commercial and institutional galleries in both Carolinas, and with recent exhibits at Lewis & Clark Gallery in Columbia and Fish or Cut Bait Gallery at Edisto Beach. Her works will also be included in upcoming exhibitions at Newberry College, SC, Davidson College, and Wake Forest University's Babcock Center this fall, both in NC.

Blyth graduated from the College of Charleston in 1978 where she studied painting under William Halsey and John Michel. She has been painting and constructing assemblages since then, while building a successful career as a commercial artist, illustrator and website designer. Among other awards, her painting Indiana Barn was awarded The Tops at the 1997 South Carolina State Fair, and one of her works was included in the SC State Fair/SC State Museum Traveling exhibit for 2000. She has received several honors for her commercial work as well.

Blyth is represented in South Carolina by the Rutledge Street Gallery in Camden and Fish or Cut Bait Gallery at Edisto Beach.
