July Issue 2001

Durham Arts Council in Durham, NC, Features Works of Mark Blanchard

Silence in Black and White, photographs by Mark Blanchard is scheduled to open in the Semans Gallery of the Durham Arts Council in Durham, NC, on July 19 and continue through August 20, 2001.

Blanchard will be exhibiting his black & white photography that distorts busy scenes of everyday life into peaceful portrayals if tranquility. He chooses the medium of photography due to its impressionistic view of the world. Through the shades of gray, fuzzy dots, and abstract contrast emerges a quiet, often surreal, representation of reality. Blanchard's approach to photography is simple. When he captures an image, he does not concern himself with the technical aspects of photography. He seizes the moment, then "works" with the image to get desired result on paper.

A native of Tarboro, NC, Blanchard currently resides in Henderson, NC. Throughout his life he has used the arts in expressing himself in many different areas. However in 1994 he found his true passion in black and white photography. "With the help of a good friend, and a few hundred hours in the dark, I began an insatiable hunger that only the light can feed and only the darkness can subside."
