July Issue 2001
Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Steve Tengelsen
Grovewood Studio Artist Steve Tengelsen will be having a much anticipated solo exhibit at the Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, NC, from July 20 - Sept. 2. Even though he's better known for custom cabinetry, Tengelsen also makes interesting furniture pieces for the kitchen.
Tengelsen's experiences with woodworking are wide and varied. He received his MA from San Diego State after a BA from Humboldt. He was an Artist-in-Residence at the Anderson Ranch outside Aspen, CO, and at The Appalachian Craft School in TN.
Masterfully built with solid woods and veneers, Tengelsen's furniture displays an individual style, with smooth curves and fluid lines. He builds his custom kitchens with the same artistic integrity. Designing them like large pieces of furniture with surprises and a sense of humor, he often ties specific pieces together thematically. He does mostly commission work, in which customers come by word of mouth, proving that previous clients' satisfaction and excitement are genuine. His work reflects the fact that he has mastered his craft.
On display in the gallery will be an Apothecary/Spice
cabinet which has numerous small drawers and a set of shelves
behind its glass doors, a wall cabinet with a landscape painted
on each panel, a bookcase, and a china hutch as well as many other
creative kitchen furniture pieces. This is a show we are all excited
to see and hope you get the chance to experience as well.
