Hickory Museum of Art Exhibition Brings ASU Faculty Work to Hickory, NC

When they are not using their talents to help young artists perfect their crafts, the faculty of Appalachian State University's Department of Art create their own diverse, exciting works. A sampling of these works is included in From the Faculty of Appalachian State University, an exhibition on view now through Aug. 30, 2001, in Hickory Museum of Art's Coe Gallery.

"We are pleased to expose our audience to the caliber of works created by these educators and artists," said Hickory Museum of Art Curator Mary Agnes Beach. "We hope this is the beginning of a strong partnership with Appalachian State University."

The exhibition highlights 45 works by 25 members of ASU's art faculty. The artists work in both traditional and alternative mediums. Oil and acrylic paintings, collages, drawings, digital image combinations, ceramics and fiber art are included in the display.

"The exhibition reflects the beauty of creating art in a university setting," Beach said. "Forward-thinking and experimental work - as well as work that is convincing in its aesthetic and intellectual appeal - is encouraged and rewarded. The art world, as a whole, is fed by this experimentation and creativity."

Those who view the ASU faculty exhibition are encouraged to learn more about the artists and to comment on their work. "Many of these works are meant to encourage dialogue," said Beach. "Within the gallery is a catalogue that includes extensive artist statements from last year's ASU faculty exhibition. Along with this, visitors will find e-mail addresses of faculty. All who view the exhibition are encouraged to contact these artists and offer responses to their art."

Throughout the summer, several of the exhibition's artists will discuss their work in a series of "Art Attacks," informal gallery talks held at Hickory Museum of Art. Call the Museum for a current schedule.
