July Issue 2001
Iredell Museum in Statesville, NC, Offers Works of Four Artists
Join the Iredell Museum in Statesville, NC, for a creative exhibition concept featuring four different artists and mediums. The exhibition will be on view through July 14, 2001. The featured artists are Mary Farrell, potter, Addie James, folk art painter, Thelma Bennett, basket- weaver, and James Gutzmer, photojournalist.
Mary Farrell, of Westmoore Pottery in Seagrove, NC, will display her traditional redware. The Farrells are well-known in the living history community for their fine reproductions of 18th and 19th century North Carolina pottery, which has been featured in "County Living" and "Early American Life" magazines. Many of Farrell's pieces are in use at the Museum's homestead site.
Since Addie James made her debut at Art on the Green last August, her art has been in demand. She is a folk art painter with a very unusual touch. Her African-American works are colorful and inspiring.
Our third female artist is Thelma Bennett, a sweetwater basket weaver from Mt. Pleasant, SC. Bennett's baskets represent a long tradition in her family, an artform handed down through the generations. Sweetwater basketmaking, an original West African craft, has been in continuous production along the South Carolina Lowcountry for 300 years.
Photojournalist James Gutzmer is our fourth artist for this show. Formerly a photographer with the "Statesville Record and Landmark", Gutzmer is now in the Coast Guard, aiming for a career in photojournalism. His love of photography shows in his works. Look for local scenes captured by his lens.
Pieces from each artist will be available for
purchase.
