Exhibit of Platinum Prints at the Page Walker Center in Cary, NC
The Page Walker Arts and History Center announces the opening of an exhibition of platinum prints at the Page Walker Arts and History Center on July 1 and continues through Aug. 1. The exhibition entitled A Walk Down Academy Street features twelve platinum prints by Joe Lipka.
Platinum Printing, invented in the 1870s, was widely used by photographic artists until the 1930s. It was replaced by the Gelatin Silver process, which continues to be used in black and white photography. A very small number of photographers dedicated to this technically difficult and expensive process continue to produce elegant images in this medium.
Joe Lipka has been photographing for thirty years. He has been creating platinum prints since 1990 when he received an Emerging Artist Grant from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission and the Joseph Fletcher Foundation to learn this alternative photographic process. He is the author of several photographic magazine articles, and his work has appeared in numerous shows throughout the United States.
The exhibition is in the newly opened 2nd floor gallery at the Page-Walker. Watercolors by John Sweemer are exhibited concurrently in the 1st floor gallery.
