Beaufort Art Association Gallery Features Works by Mary Segars
Mary Segars, one of Beaufort's most popular artists, will be the featured artist at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery in Beaufort, SC, in a show opening July 11 and continuing through Aug. 20, 2002.
Segars had been producing pastel portraits on commission most of her life, when she turned to oils about four years ago. Within six months of purchasing her first tube of paint, she was invited to participate in a two-person show, an event that resulted in "a bunch of" sales and immediate invitations for more shows from galleries who wanted to carry her work.
She turns out paintings at a rapid pace, about one a week, and all sell as fast as they are displayed. The judges agree with her public acclaim. She has taken home top prizes from six of the seven shows she has entered.
Most of Segars' paintings are Lowcountry scenes that catch the shimmering heat and the dark cooling shadows. She paints trees and plants and humans who have prevailed over the raw power of wind and tide and Southern hardships. "Her paintings record the reasons I love the Lowcountry," explains one of her fans. Her work is currently carried exclusively in the BAA Gallery and at Art and Soul gallery in Beaufort.
Segars, who is the mother of three boys aged 11 through 15, lives on Lady's Island, SC, in Beaufort with her husband, a veterinarian for the Department of Natural Resources. In addition to painting, she teaches art classes, is co-treasurer for the BAA Gallery and is an avid swimmer.
