Cameo Fine Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Offers Summer Exhibition
Cameo Fine Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, is now exhibiting new works by all of our regular featured artists through Sept. 6, 2002. The exhibit, displayed both in the main gallery and on the 1211 Lincoln Street side, explodes with color, form and distinction. Most of our artists are established locally, while others are emerging from regional areas.
Liisa Salosaari Jasinski, a native of Finland, currently residing in Newberry, SC, has been featured in many group exhibits outside of the gallery and most recently shared an exhibit with regional artist Janette Grassi, entitled, I built a boat/Fearless Introspection, in Cameo's main gallery in 2001. Jasinski is an abstract expressionist whose canvases are full of bright, vibrant and built-up color. In her most recent works, she uses pieces of newspaper, burlap and oil sticks, all on canvas. Jasinski participated in the Palmetto Tree Project in Columbia, SC, and currently just finished Mysterious Comings and Goings, a steel door for The Steel Door project. Both projects were sponsored by the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington counties.
Leanne Kelley-Badeaux and Amanda Thorne, both from Columbia, SC, and graduated of Columbia College, Columbia, SC, have been traveling for the last few years to catch inspiration for their latest works. Thorne was a participant in the 2002 Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Show, in Charleston, SC, where she placed 3rd. She paints with oils very loosely onto canvases and often paints scenes from Venice, Italy and New York City cafes. Kelley-Badeaux works in charcoal, pencil, watercolor and pastels to create her "Blue Girls" who all have smeared red lipstick and red polish on their fingernails. They are very sketchy and often exaggerated, yet effective with a minimal amount of color. Together Kelley-Badeaux and Thorne have created one-of-a-kind jewelry sets, hand-painted furniture and hand-painted ladies hand bags.
Britta Cruz, originally from Germany, now residing in Columbia, SC, is exhibiting porcelain sculptures on wood bases which are form an old abandoned piano body. She has also created small abstract paintings with raku/porcelain figures which are attached to the paintings, all of them are from her latest series, Life Outside the Box. Each have natural gesso, water colored wax and polish, paper maché with polished gesso, gold leaf and painted silk. Cruz was also a participant in The Steel Door Project.
Carole Connely, a figurative/abstract painter, is a native of Illinois, currently residing in Stone Mountain, GA. She earned her BA from Kansas City Art Institute and her work is represented in galleries in AL, NY, TN, FL, GA and VA. Connely has exhibited in over twenty group and one-woman shows and is in private collections around the US. Her masterful creations are a production of thought provoking paintings in which ideas and images coexist to realistic elements. Her figures are integrated in the overall workings and seem to resonate with a single idea. "In my work, the figure is immersed and fused into an environment of color and texture. With this approach, I hope to cause the viewer to become aware of these symbiotic reactions."
Cameo Art Gallery is now featuring the jewelry of Anne Bivens. Her pieces are original one-of-a-kind and created from combinations of hand blown glass, beads from the world over, antique glass and Austrian crystals taken from vintage necklaces, semiprecious stones, freshwater pearls and handmade Bali sterling silver.
In the 1211 Lincoln Street side, Cameo is featuring raku/pottery by Robin MacKay, Juliet Dearing, and Neil Combs, ceramics by Jean McWhorter, paintings by Al Beyer, Borys Buzkij, Helen Fried, Janette Grassi and Sherie Koenig.
