Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Features Works by Rick Wells
Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, will hold its fifth in a series of public showings on July 3 to launch the Independence Day holiday weekend. Artist Rick Wells, from Hopkins, SC, will be the featured artist whose art form, plein air, will be on display in the coastal gallery through Aug. 10, 2002.
Brailsford Sutton, the owner explains, "Plein air is a term used for paintings or drawings made directly from nature and infused with a feeling of the open air. It's light, it's sensual and the South Carolina coast and topography creates a perfect tableau for this medium."
"These paintings are a record of my life," states Wells, who has been painting for 25 years. "My work in the Fish or Cut Bait Gallery is done in the plein air style, which means they were painted on location and from personal observation. I never used the aids of photographs or other devices." The artist continues, "It was the marshes of Edisto that touched my soul."
The paintings of the Impressionistic era and work reminiscent of the Barbizon School are the best-known examples of plein air. Common images are renditions of the painters themselves, standing outside sketching paintings in gardens, doing portraits of people outdoors and exterior scenes in the countryside.
