Wickwire Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by James Scott Morrison, NWS
Wickwire fine art/folk art Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, will feature paintings of James Scott Morrison, NWS in the exhibition entitled, Realism in Watercolor, on view through July 31, 2002. Landscapes, shorebirds, boats, figures, beautiful historic buildings as well as aviation are frequent subject matter. The fine art of Morrison hangs in private and corporate collections in the US, Canada, Spain, Australia, Singapore, and Finland. Morrison likes strong contrast and the use of light and creates on-site and in his studio. He is an artist who loves the looseness of watercolor as well as tight ink painting using a freehand line drawing technique. His masterpieces in this media are incredible feats of precision, detail and color.
A former fighter and reconnaissance pilot for the US Air Force, Morrison was interested in art as a child. Fortunately, his father, a noted sports cartoonist, gave his young artist son a lot of support in his endeavors. Yet, after a year of art studies in college, Morrison turned to economics and was very involved in sports during those years. Several years in the military led to his 17-year career in the aerospace industry in a reconnaissance laboratory. After that he went into international marketing - traveling constantly. During this period he got his MBA but also took up artwork again to break the boredom of constant travel. He drew people in the airport and scenes of the various places he visited. As he started painting and drawing at home, he got into local, then regional and national competitions. Awards were won at every level and he made a decision he has been happy with - to take early retirement and concentrate all his energy on art. Since then he has been adding year by year to a long list of awards and recognitions.
Morrison's large paintings of people have brought him acclaim, To Buy or Not to Buy won Second Place in the Biltmore Estates April Festival of Flowers Show in Asheville, NC. This painting done in lively hues of rose and violets shows several women talking animatedly at a herb festival. Morrison remarkably captured in each face the real emotion and decision-making process occurring. In 1998, Morrison was selected for the national 1998 "Art for the Parks" competition. In 1999, he won a prestigious award in a national competition of the National Watercolor Society, and was given signature membership status in the Society, His winning watercolor Fletcher Flea Market Man has been in the Society's traveling show. A Giclée of this work is available as well as another painting in this series. In the same year, the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force selected him for the USAF Art Program. Locally and regionally, Morrison conducts art workshops where he shares his knowledge of watercolor.
