Betsy Havens
Betsy Havens began her studies at age 12 at
the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, and studied art throughout
her school career. She went to the University of Georgia
and the University of South Carolina earning a Bachelor of Arts
in Design, and did post-graduate work in the History of Architecture
and advanced study in Southern Literature.
In the year 2000, Havens placed second in a juried exhibition
at the Rice Museum in Georgetown, SC. In 2001 she was awarded
the Director's Circle Award for a large acrylic painting on canvas
entitled The Yucatan Wonder and won Honorable Mention in
the Georgetown Watercolor Society Show for her painting The
Red Chair. In 2002, Havens won Second Place at the South Carolina
State Fair Fine Art Show for a painting entitled, Creek Shrimping,
and two of her paintings received Purchase Awards.
Havens considers herself a colorist, finding that a way of expressing great emotion. Her paintings have been inspired by her travels throughout the world and range from Tuscany landscapes to Lowcounty shrimpers, from Byzantium domes to basket weavers.
Jim Calk
Jim Calk, the other member of this husband and wife painting team, is from Saluda, SC. Calk uses oils, watercolors and pastels to give his landscapes an impressionistic, poetic style. In addition to his art talent, Calk is a classically trained musician in piano, organ, harp and violin.
As a painter in great demand Calk has exhibited in many shows such as Festival of Flowers, Greenwood, SC; South Carolina Watercolor Society Traveling Show; Anderson Arts Council Show and the South Carolina State Fair. Numerous works of his are in private and corporate collections.
