Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will host the exhibit Introductions, on view through July 12, 2003. The exhibit will feature works by Ben Aronson, Julian Hatton, Catherine Kehoe, Katy Schneider, Bill Scott, Thomas Tietjen, Suzanne H. Ulrich and Sherrie Wolf.
Ben Aronson
Ben Aronson received both his BFA and MFA from Boston University. Aronson's still-lifes and street scenes are about light and shadow which delineate the boundaries of our vision, his contrasting areas of darkness and light create drama, evoke a mood and form the foundation of the visual dynamic of his work. Aronson has taught plein air painting at the University of Massachusetts, drawing at Harvard Graduate School of Design and Painting at the Boston University School of Fine Art. Aronson's work can be found in the collections of Boston Public Library, Danforth Museum of Art, Walt Disney Corporation, New York Times and Sony Corporation.
Julian Hatton
Julian Hatton received his BA from Harvard College and continued his studies at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. In his paintings, he reinvents the landscape using bold color and form to create his own visual interpretations. Hatton was awarded the Pollock-Krasner grant in painting in 1998 and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant in 1993. Recently the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired one of his paintings for their permanent collection.
Catherine Kehoe
Catherine Kehoe received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and her MFA from College of Fine Arts, Boston University. Kehoe's main subjects are still-lifes and portraits rendered on wood. Plates, fruits and ordinary objects are captured in intense colors that dazzle and seduce. Kehoe works small but the effect is big. Her mastery of light and shadow enlivens pictorial space and makes even the most mundane objects glow like jewels. Her work can be found in the collections of Fidelity Investments, Wellington Management and numerous private collections.
Katy Schneider
Katy Schneider received her BFA from Yale University and her MFA from Indiana University and has received fellowships from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Skowhegan School of Painting, she currently teaches at Smith College in Massachusetts. Schneider takes inspiration from her own world with painting small scale portraits and still lifes. These affectionate images of domestic life have masterful light and impressionistic brushwork. Schneider's work can be found in many public and private collections.
Bill Scott
Bill Scott studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and informally studied with Joan Mitchell in Vetheuil, France. Scott has been very active in the art world of the mid-atlantic region, well-known as a painter, writer and curator. He wryly refers to his own richly colored, almost abstract work as "near-sighted realism". Scott's works can be found in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Asheville Art Museum.
Thomas Tietjen
Thomas Tietjen studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is currently teaching drawing and painting at the Sharons Arts Center in New Hampshire. Tietjen reacts to objects around him that visually intrigue him, whether it is paint cans, boxes or bundles of letters, he believes beauty lies in the most trivial things. the focus of these paintings are light, shapes and abstract design. Works can be found in the collections of Boston Capital Institutional Advisors, Wellington Management and the H.W. Wilson Company.
Suzanne H. Ulrich
Suzanne H. Ulrich received her BFA from Syracuse University in New York. Ulrich's collages are composed of irregular bands of color, shapes, typography, scoring, subtle textures and gouache and buttermilk paints. Though her works are minimalist in nature, Ulrich is interested in the small story within each collage. Some are quiet, some are forceful, some are complex and some are sparse. This is a visual language of developed concepts and meanings that exist beyond verbal expression. Ulrich's works can be found in the collections of United States Department of State, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Marriot Orlando World Center and Fidelity Investments.
Sherrie Wolf
Sherrie Wolf received her BFA in painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art and her MA in printmaking from Chelsea College of Art, London, England. Wolf paints still-life realism with a unique perspective, by juxtaposing form with the tradition of artistic borrowing, she sets up a dramatic narrative inspired both by objects from her studio and the work of past artists. These explorations build on the traditions of realism while creating a contemporary point of view. Wolf was awarded the Oregon Arts Commission fellowship in 2000 and her work can be found in the collections of Bell Telephone, Hilton Hotel and Steelcase, Inc.
