July Issue 2003

Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Katherine Lewis

Hilton Head Art League artist, Katherine Lewis, will be exhibiting her work at the League's Gallery in Pineland Station, suite 207, on Hilton Head island, SC, from July 8 through Aug. 2, 2003. The exhibition entitled, In Pursuit of Spirit, features works in oil done in a broad spectrum of subjects, including still-life, landscapes and portraits.

Born in California to a traveling US Navy family, Lewis enjoys painting in any port or part of the world. Many of the paintings in the show will depict international locations.

A fashion and commercial illustration major in college, Lewis went on to study at the Art Students League in New York. Her primary fine arts teacher was Arthur Maynard, senior instructor at the Ridgewood Art Institute where Lewis also taught oil painting for 21 years.

Lewis says that the aim of her art "is to achieve the harmonious relationship of one part to another, in order to create an impression of unity and to present that impression as synthesis of personal vision and reason."

A variety of factors influence the creation of a successful painting. For landscape and seascapes, the primary factors are time of day and the atmospheric conditions. Varying light while painting on location presents a constant challenge in any geographic location. Indoors, it's the play of light against shadow. Inspiration, however, is vitally important. But, without a good grounding in the basics, the artist will be unable to express that inspiration. Ultimately, spirit and knowledge go hand in hand. But, it has been said, "knowledge must step back and tip its hat to spirit. Spirit is a less literal kind of atmosphere. It is the air, or mood, that surrounds a work of art. Artists spend their entire lives trying to communicate this spirit." Lewis has demonstrated the success of her pursuit of spirit in the art she has chosen to exhibit at the Art League Gallery. Her still lifes crackle with spirit and her landscapes capture the true ambience of the time and place in which they were painted.

A member of the Hilton Head Art League, Lewis also belongs to the Hudson Valley Art Association and the American Artists Professional League, and is an honorary member of the Ridgewood Art Institute. She has won numerous awards, including ones from exhibitions produced at the Salmagundi Club in New York and the Catherine Lorrilard Wolfe Club. Her work is represented in galleries in Carmel, CA, and Manasquan and Bay Head, NJ.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts and improving the art skills of its members. It operates a permanent gallery, managed by volunteers, for the exhibition and sale of artwork by its members. To encourage young artists, it holds an exhibition of student artwork at the beginning of each year and provides a scholarship for students seeking careers in the visual arts.
