SC Watercolor Society Announces Winners of 26th Annual Member Exhibition in Anderson, SC
The South Carolina Watercolor Society's 26th Annual Awards Exhibition is on display at the Anderson County Arts Center, in Anderson, SC, through Aug. 15, 2003.
From the 197 entries submitted by society members statewide, the juror, George James, selected 76 paintings for the exhibition and $9,450 in awards were presented to the top 30 artists.
George James, Juror
The juror, George James, works on synthetic paper and traditional watercolor media and has taken the medium to a new creative experience. With this experimentation, he has received numerous awards for the uniqueness of his approach. Most recently, he earned the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal in 1999 and the Bronze Medal in 1998 and 2001, Watercolor West First Place in 1998 and Third Place in 1999, and the National Watercolor Society Silver Star in 1998. James earned signature memberships with American, National, Northwest, and Watercolor West societies plus the distinguished Dolphin Fellow of AWS.
James said, "I would like to thank the Board of Directors of the SC Watercolor Society for the invitation to jury an outstanding number of high quality entries to this, your 26th Annual Exhibition. Looking beyond the high quality of skills that many of your artists have in design, color and technical mastery, some paintings stand and communicate their presence with a special authority." In addition, he said, "The artists who are presented in this show carry the added responsibility of shaping the overall quality of watercolor in the South, and specifically South Carolina. This exhibition is a representation of the evolution of American watercolor and all of us involved in this development welcome its health and vigor as it is presented in this exhibition."
