July Issue 2004
Dalton Gallery in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Ray Moose
The Arts Council of Rock Hill and York County
will present an exhibition of works by North Carolina artist,
Ray Moose, in the Dalton Gallery in the Arts Center in Rock Hill,
SC. Moose's Native American Visions exhibit consists of
a series of sculptures inspired by Native American forms and culture.
The exhibit will be on display from July 1 through Aug. 23, 2004.
Moose draws inspiration from Eastern art, Egyptian art, and the
art of indigenous Native Americans. He is self-taught and works
primarily from his home in Mt. Pleasant, NC, where he has a home-built
bronze furnace, muller, and a sculpting studio in his barn loft.
After completing military service in 1972, Moose apprenticed with
Midas Wheeler, a stone mason in Boone, NC. He has many colleagues
who have influenced his work, including Graham Weathers, James
Rhea, Ben Long, and Tony Griffin. Moose was awarded a 1993 Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Emerging Artist's Grant. In 1998, he was given a grant to create
a permanent mural with students at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School.
Moose's artwork has been commissioned around the southeast, including
a nine foot bronze sculpture at Harrah's in Cherokee, NC.
