July Issue 2004
Elder Art Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Presents Two Summer Exhibitions
Elder Art Gallery in
Charlotte, NC's Historic South End District announces two exhibitions
featuring works by Philip Mullen and Javier Lopez Barbosa, Dale
McEntire, Srimongkol Darawali, and Ed Handelman. Both exhibits
will be on view from July 2 through Aug. 30, 2004.
Philip Mullen will be featured in his first solo exhibition in
Charlotte at Elder Art Gallery. He was born in 1942 and received
his BA from the University of Minnesota. He earned his MA in Studio
Art from the University of North Dakota and PhD in Comparative
Arts from Ohio University. Mullen lives in Columbia, SC, and is
Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of South
Carolina.
Mullen's work holds great character through his gifted use of light to enhance the images within his paintings. Many of his paintings concentrate on joining elements of the indoors with those from the outside world. He has been featured solo artist at David Findlay Galleries in New York and Dubins Gallery in Los Angeles. He was honored with a thirty-five year retrospective at McKissick Museum in Columbia in 1995-1996. Highlights of his career came through the selection of his work to be included in the Whitney Museum's Biennial of Contemporary Art, The Smithsonian's Traveling Show for Contemporary American Drawing V, and the San Francisco Museum of Art's National Drawing Exhibition.
Also featured at Elder
Art Gallery will be paintings and sculpture by four new gallery
artists: Javier Lopez Barbosa of Santa Fe, NM; Dale McEntire of
Saluda, NC; Srimongkol Darawali of San Francisco, CA; and Ed Handelman
of San Francisco, CA. The different styles and techniques represented
by each artist are consistent with the gallery's mission to bring
a diverse mix of artwork to the Charlotte area.
