July Issue 2004
Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Bob Graham
5 Minutes 'til Midnight, an exhibition of black and white graphite drawings by Bob Graham will be on display at Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, through July 31, 2004.
The drawings in this exhibition are rarely
seen by the public, if at all. They are a glimpse into the personal
life of Graham. They are a part of a world that is not often shared
with others. "I do these drawings for myself, for my own
personal enrichment and understanding. Usually when I finish a
piece, it goes straight into a closet or underneath a bed never
to see the light of day again. Some are mere sketches of a fleeting
moment, while others are more precise and detailed, but the majority
go unfinished. Maybe that's the way it should be. It keeps me
grasping for more, searching for that one pure and perfect line
that captures the essence of what it means to be alive."
Graham has been drawing for as long as he can remember. "From
a very early age, I always wanted a pen or a pencil to draw with.
My mother told me that I never liked crayons or coloring books.
She used to bring the brown paper bags from the grocery store
home so I could draw on them. This would provide hours of entertainment
as well as keeping me out of my mom's hair for hours upon hours.
All I wanted to do was just draw."
The majority of Graham's work is historical by nature and his illustrations have appeared on numerous book covers, as well as countless national magazine articles. For a look inside the personal workings of Graham's artistic mind, visit 5 Minutes 'til Midnight.
