July Issue 2005

Charleston City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by David Ross Puls

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, D Construction 2005: Furniture by David Ross Puls, on view from July 21 through Aug. 23, 2005.

Currently a resident of Charleston, Puls was raised and educated in Iowa. At the University of Iowa, he studied sculpture, metalworking and creative writing, earning a BFA in 1983. He earned his MFA with an emphasis in design also at the University of Iowa. As a graduate teaching assistant, he worked directly with students in their development of furniture concepts and execution. Puls exhibits nationally through the American Craft Council and private galleries.

Puls comments on his work, "Early in my woodworking career, I made the decision to forego working in traditional hardwoods and instead chose to use the new engineered wood products available. These include plywoods, particle boards, laminated veneer and oriented strand lumbers. My furniture designs grow from understanding both the structural properties and the aesthetic possibilities. The work is less dependent on familiar forms and draws inspiration from the physical exploration and the process itself. I hope that my work is as much a challenge to the viewer as it was to the maker. I see it as an opportunity that slowly reveals itself over time, making connections and asking new questions."

Annual selections for exhibitions at the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre are made in Nov. each year. Artists interested in applying to the 2006 exhibits should contact the Office of Cultural Affairs no later than Oct. 31, 2005 or by calling 843/724-7305.
