The Artists' Basement in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Two Brothers
Two brothers, Vinh Van Glover and Hanh Van Glover, from Atlanta will be displaying their work through July 15, 2006, at The Artists' Basement in Columbia, SC. They both are oil painters whose style is very unique, and hard to describe.
Vinh Van Glover had the following to offer about himself and his work. "Born in Saigon, Vietnam, during 'the summer of love' in America at a time of dramatic change in both countries. My first act of creation before departing to the new world was a helicopter made from bands of metal. A gift to the family that would be left behind. Accompanied by my mother, brother and stepfather, we arrived in the new world and began a new life. I too was going though a dramatic change. I was four.
"Savannah, GA, will always be considered my home town. Here I attended school and grew up always practicing art even though there existed no real art curriculum in the grade school years. After high school my interest revolved around the ocean and the barrier islands along the southern coast. Accessing these places by sail my journeys became an addiction. Two years passed and my boat ran ashore."
"In the fall of '87, I became a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design and felt another world begin to open up. I pursued every medium: architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, photography, historic preservation, fiber arts, interior design and large doses of art history. Finally forced to decide on a major, I choose painting and sculpture. I was in several exhibits and I sold my first painting to an unknown collector. Now I live in Atlanta. I have sold art to collectors around the United States and in London. My work is a self portrait. Although they do not contain an image of myself, they do contain thoughts of my life and the life around me. I am one with many complexities that shares close associations with the viewer."
Vinh Van continues, "Our lives are not that different and we all share the same hopes and fears. I create art to communicate these life experiences and many times others see what I'm saying sometimes in a broad general sense and sometimes in detail. Some follow the narrative of the art so closely they can see the hidden meanings which relates to them on a personal level and sometimes they can translate enough to see the association between the two of us. Even to the untrained eye my work tends to heighten their curiosity. This is the language of my art."
