July Issue 2006
Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Tim Postell and Anthony Ulinski
Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will present two new exhibitions including: Internal Rhythms, an exhibit of paintings by Tim Postell in the Center's Upfront Gallery on view from July 7 - 29, 2006, and Teaism, an exhibit of paintings by Anthony Ulinski in the Center's Lobby, on view from July 7 - 29, 2006.
Tim Postell
Tim Postell regards
his paintings as a symphony of lines, marks, splashes, and drips
of color inside the four edges of a canvas. His work represents
the moment of the internal self. Each stroke of paint is comprised
of all the elements making up the environment he is in at that
moment in time.
Postell grew up in a rural area of Gastonia, NC. After high school,
he served his country as a member of the United States Air Force.
In 1990, just one year after leaving active duty, Postell was
recalled to active duty to serve in the Gulf War. Five years later
he began a life changing journey, enrolling at East Carolina University
at the age of 28. After obtaining his BFA in May 1999, Postell
attended the prestigious Hoffberger School of Painting at the
Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, where he earned
an MFA in 2001. Postell currently resides in Knightdale, NC, and
works as a full time artist.
Anthony Ulinski
Anthony Ulinski presents a new painting series of scenes from Teaism, a teahouse just around the corner from the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. Ulinski has been working with the idea of found still life. Rather than manipulating objects and light sources, he paints from chance observation. The teahouse paintings incorporate the same kind of tabletop objects seen in Ulinski's other paintings. However, the teaism paintings are the first time Ulinski has introduced portions of the figure to his found still life works. Although this may seem like a minor alteration, he has discovered that the introduction of even the smallest portion of a figure into a still life implies a narrative with a human focus.
Ulinski was born in Indonesia and lived in Africa, Asia, and Europe, before settling in the United State. For thirty years he has worked in Raleigh as a studio furniture maker. Reflecting his diverse background, his woodwork ranges from the sleekly functional to the sculptural. He began the formal study of oil painting in 1993. He has exhibited his work in museums and galleries, including at the John Elder Gallery, NY; Funeria, San Francisco, CA; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, NC; the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art, Greensboro, NC; and Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, NC. He has participated in residency programs at Artspace, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.
