Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, Offers Works on Old South
Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, announces the upcoming exhibition entitled, New Images of the Old South, on view from July 14 through Aug. 14, 2006. The artists featuring new works are Julyan Davis, Tom McNickle, Stephen Chesley, Craig Crawford, John Burmeister and Susan Mayfield.
Julyan Davis
Julyan Davis employs a sensitive treatment of the canvas surface, embracing a subtle painterly manner with the southern landscape. Davis demonstrates a departure from a traditional realist style; he captures the character of the South by means of slight abstractions in detail. His works recall the honesty of natural color, yet emphasize a restrained personal palette. Select details invite a closer inspection, welcoming the viewer to become more intimate. Davis paints coastal Maine, Western North Carolina, and the lowcountry of Georgia and South Carolina.
Landscapes by Tom McNickle include watercolors as well as oils. McNickle's work is that of an accomplished painter, his skill is demonstrated by his ability to record what he sees in accurate detail. He is a master at handling the natural colors of the lowcountry landscape; his work reveals the many nuances of the southern quality of light and place. Works vary from Charleston street-scenes to rural landscapes.
In addition to being Charleston's oldest gallery specializing in the art of the Charleston Renaissance, Carolina Galleries also features contemporary paintings celebrating the region's continuing aesthetic evolution. Representing the works of Julyan Davis, Tom McNickle, John Andrew Burmeister, Stephen Chesley, Craig Crawford, Trey Finney, Philip Juras, Anna Onufer, Margaret Peery, Lynne Riding, Betty Robinson, and Susan Mayfield.
