July Issue 2006
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Michael Johnson and Priscilla Hollingsworth
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, counters the heat of summer with a retrospective exhibition of black and white photographs by Michael Johnson that serves as a counterpoint to a companion exhibition of colorful ceramics by Priscilla Hollingsworth. The two exhibitions will be on view at the gallery from July 1 through Aug. 31, 2006.
Michael Johnson
For more than thirty years Johnson has created silver gelatin photographs of rural American landscapes. Critics have written that Johnson's photographs "speak with an eloquence of vision and craft" and referred to Johnson's "ability to simplify things without being ordinary." Gallery owner Liu says that the photographs in the retrospective exhibition evoke the timeless qualities of the landscapes of both the American heartland and the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Among the institutions that have collected Johnson's photographs are the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC; the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, IL; the Art Institute of Chicago; and Charleston's Gibbes Museum of Art. Johnson's photographs are also included in the collections of Sprint, McDonald's, Bank of America, and many other corporations as well.
Priscilla Hollingsworth is an associate professor of art at Augusta State University in Augusta, GA. She received her AB in Visual Art from Princeton, where she studied with Toshiko Takaezu, and an MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington. Images of Hollingsworth's sculptural ceramics have appeared in several books, including 500 Bowls and Ceramics: A Potter's Handbook. She has held several residencies, including one at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada.
Liu says that the fun colors of Hollingsworth's vessels are what first attracted her to the work. Liu goes on to say that they are "delightful little, alive looking" objects that will serve as a perfect foil to the serene black and white images that Johnson creates.
