Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, Offers New Exhibitions for Summer
The Spartanburg County
Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, is pleased to announce two new
shows opening in July. The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg will
have their 33rd Annual Juried Exhibition in the Museum's
Milliken and Parsons Galleries. The juried show will open on July
22 and be on display through Aug. 27, 2006.
Formed in Oct. of 1957, the Artists' Guild is among the longest-lived
visual arts organizations in South Carolina. This annual event
is a benchmark of the guild's success, always impressing judges
with the amount of talent that resides in Spartanburg, Cherokee,
Greenville, Laurens, Polk, Rutherford and Union Counties. This
years juror is Barbara Haaksma, Director of Design and Marketing
for Milliken Corporation's Global Automotive Group. Haaksma has
a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design.
The Burwell Gallery will feature the paintings of April Harrison, a Greenville native, now living in Simpsonville, SC. This exhibit will be on display from July 10 through Sept. 3, 2007.
Harrison is a member of Exodus, a well-known group of African-American artists living in the Upstate of South Carolina. She is a self-taught artist who began painting in 1997. Since then, her work has won several awards, and her paintings have been shown in The Greenville County Museum of Art, The Pickens County Museum of Art and History, The Anderson Arts Council and The Red Door Gallery.
Harrison says that her work is influenced by her "desire to capture positive cultural imagery". She produces color-rich works, which evoke an inner spirituality that focuses on "the warmth and comfort of the nurtured, bonded and familiar spirit". One of her favorite and recurring themes is the Matriarch of the Family expressing "the strength of a mother's love and support".
