Lowcountry Artists Ltd. in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jackie Wukela

Lowcountry Artists Ltd. in Charleston, SC, is pleased to present work by Jackie Wukela in a showing entitled Totally CP (Colored Pencil), on view from July 1 - 31, 2007.

Wukela has been a working artist for nearly thirty years, exploring various media. For the last few yeas, however, she has had a special emphasis on colored pencil. "Certainly new to South Carolina and Charleston, pencil is an unfamiliar medium for so many people. For the artist, however, it is portable and extremely versatile and rewarding. For the collector, these pieces offer a new look and feel." Wukela says.

Traditional work in colored pencil tends to be very realistic. Wukela's work of this type is finely drawn, often nearly photo realistic - in strong colors with fine textures, featuring florals and still lifes - cherries on tile in glistening water. Figures' skin tones are especially rich and almost soft to the touch. Wukela says, "These pieces take a long time and are painstakingly done."

But Wukela is known for experimentation. Other featured work ranges from impressionistic faces with feathered brush work to brighter innovative pieces in which strongly colored scribbled features become abstracted on brighter paper backgrounds.

Who knew the lowly colored pencil could reach such heights? The Colored Pencil Society of America certainly did and continuously strives to inform the rest of us that these pencils are not just for coloring in states on elementary school maps, but are a legitimate art medium. In 2004, it granted Wukela its highest honor when her Nassau Lady VIII won the Society's International Competition. Another of the Nassau Lady series, Nassau Lady IX, won an international award in 2007. Nassau Ladies XVI and XVII, a new phase of the "Lady" series, will debut in the Totally CP show.
