Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Patricia Cole-Ferullo
The Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Small Works from Italy, featuring works by Patricia Cole-Ferullo, on view from July 6 - 31, 2007.
Cole-Ferullo, who moved from Tryon, NC, to Pisciotti, Italy, one year ago, describes her new work as "spontaneous abstractions" based on her emotional response to her new surroundings.
The sky and sea, and the rocky coastline of her new home near the Tyrrhenean Sea have moved the artist to use a palette that is brighter and more colorful than a year ago. Exploration of the ancient sites of Magna Graecia, Greek settlements along the coast of Italy dating back to the 7th Century BC, reveal for her an impression of the past that is the subject of some of the new work.
"A deep sense of place envelops me and cradles my senses," Cole-Ferullo says of the intense emotion that precedes her compulsion to sketch and paint these colors and shapes, "before they morph into another dimension and disappear forever."
In Italy, Cole-Ferullo continues to experiment with different materials. In addition to natural earth powders and pigments, she often uses sea water as a medium for her watercolors and feathers as brushes.
She and her husband Dom Ferullo operate Artist Adventures, a company that designs retreats for artists at any level of expertise. The retreats give artists an opportunity to share ideas about inspiration and creativity while enjoying the local cuisine and landscape.
Cole-Ferullo received a BA in Fine Art from Florida State University, prior to studying with Nicholas Carone, a man who studied with Hans Hoffman and was one of the founders of the New York Studio School. Following studies at the Instituto de Allende in Mexico, Cole-Ferullo lived again in Florida, her native state, and began painting with an organic quality and experimenting with color.
"Pat's work has always demonstrated a looseness and freedom that is even more evident in this latest work from Italy," said Bonnie Rash, owner of the Silver Fox Gallery.
Cole-Ferullo is a resident artist of the Silver Fox Gallery. Other resident artists are William Martin Jean, Cleveland, OH; Tim Howe, San Diego, CA; Leo Monahan, Asheville, NC; Carol Beth Icard, Landrum, SC; Philip Dusenbury, Tryon, NC; Sharon Tesche, Tryon, NC; Margaret Scanlan, Knoxville, TN; Colleen Sterling, Blairsville, GA; and Susan Webb Lee, Asheville, NC.
The Silver Fox Gallery recently completed a major renovation that added 2,000 square feet of retail space for furniture, lighting and fine art.
