Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash,
NC, Features Works by Babs Ludwick
Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic 10,000 square-foot gallery in Calabash, NC, is featuring watercolor and mixed media pieces by Babs Ludwick in a show on view through Aug. 9, 2008.
The exhibition, entitled Abstractly Babs, consists of 16 new emotionally charged pieces. Said Ludwick, "There's a lot of energy in these paintings that I've been trying to express. I couldn't sit down and paint houses and trees right now. I had too much happening in my life. With Fire and Ice, I just found myself wanting to work with black and white and red and suddenly I was going back and forth trying to find a balance. It made me realize I was in a state of chaos and needed to center myself. Same with my acrylic over watercolor Beside Myself. In fact, someone looked at the work and said, 'Whoa, what's going on in your life right now?' I looked at all this chaos, and said, I need to center myself. That's what that circle is, it's me trying to center myself."
Ludwick
is primarily a watercolor artist who is open to exploring a variety
of media, including charcoal, acrylic, pastel, sumi-e, and collage. Her
motto is "Do what makes your heart beat."
Ludwick is equally at home paintings landscapes or abstract pieces,
says she loves the creative process, "The creative process
is as mysterious as the unfolding of life, the revealing of an
emotion, passion, or a surprise. It can be as simple as
getting something done, being in the right place at the right
time, or bringing order out of chaos."
When Ludwick first started painting, she said
she pretended she was five years old, "You know how five-year-olds
are; they think they can do anything. They love to draw
and color. They don't know what they can't do. Playing is what
they do. In the book, The Tao of Watercolor, Jeanne Carbonetti
says, 'Playfulness is the ability to respond with the newness
of a child's wonder and the skill of a practiced adult.'"
That's Ludwick. She's fearless; she just jumps in and plays. Being
in tune with the universe is critical to this creative artist.
According to gallery owner, Ginny Lassiter, "Babs is always experimenting, exploring color, not knowing what is going to happen, but allowing space and time for the creative process."
Ludwick has twice been a featured artist in shows at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC. One of her paintings was also the anchor piece in an earlier exhibit at Sunset River Marketplace called, Why Red?.
Ludwick is currently a member of Studio 12, a group of artists who meet weekly at Sunset River Marketplace to paint and share art experiences. Other professional organizations include the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Brunswick Arts Council, Waterway Art Association and Associated Artists of Southport.
