UNC Asheville in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Celia Gray

UNC Asheville in Asheville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Hold Sway, featuring 18 works by UNC Asheville senior Celia Gray in the Highsmith University Union Gallery, on view through Aug. 5, 2008.

Gray employs a method known as encaustic painting, which uses pigmented beeswax in favor of traditional paints. The wax is kept in liquid form at around 200 degrees by hot plates while working. Surface effects and images are created using various methods of scraping, masking, incising, branding and buffing. The technique allows for added depth and a more tactile quality.

Gray will receive a bachelor's of art degree from UNC Asheville in August. Her work is also on display at The Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville and The Penland Gallery at Penland School of Crafts.
