Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Work of Anthony Ulinski

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, is pleased to present an exhibition entitled, Paper & Light of paper and cane lanterns created by woodworker, Anthony Ulinski. The exhibit will be on view Aug. 4 - 26, 2000.

Ulinski was invited to Artspace this summer as an artist-in-residence for 3 weeks. During his residency, he created a variety of lanterns based on traditional Japanese lantern-making techniques. The processes used to create these pieces require a very low level of technology (clippers, scissors, glue), unlike the processes used to create his wood furniture pieces. This residency has been valuable in that regard because he could not have created these delicate lanterns in his woodworking studio.

Ulinski was born in Indonesia and raised in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the US. In 1976, he settled in Raleigh, and opened his furniture studio, Dovetail Woodworks. His furniture combines traditional European cabinetmaking techniques with forms and images from the different cultures in which he was raised. Ulinski is a largely self-taught craftsman who has taught and assisted with workshops at Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mountain School, and Peters Valley Craft Center. His work is represented by several galleries including the John Elder Gallery in NYC, and has been exhibited nationally, including at the Smithsonian Craft Fair in Washington, DC.
