August Issue 2000
City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Two New Exhibits
The City Gallery of the Dock Street Theatre
in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of silver gelatin prints
by Sullivan's Island artist Dr. Beverly Genez through Aug. 15.
Also on view Aug. 18 - Sept. 15 will be an exhibit of oil on canvas
paintings by Wilfred Spoon entitled Wilfred Spoon Paintings.
Dr. Beverly Genez was born and raised in the South. She graduated
from Duke University with a BA and Ph.D in Foreign Languages.
After raising two children to school age, she attended medical
school and did a residency in Radiology. She retired after practicing
medicine for nineteen years. During her Radiology career she fell
in love with photography, which shares some technical aspects
with radiology. Her formal training in photography includes a
one-year tutorial with Michelle Van Parys at the College of Charleston.
Her exhibition is a collection of images she accumulated over
the years of her career.
Dr. Genez comments on her work: "As a physician specializing in MRI, I see on a daily basis scans showing human anatomy. I find these internal structures fascinating, both medically and artistically, they have value for their function, as well as for their shape, harmony and rhythm. Many of them are intrinsically beautiful as abstract shapes. Others, like the underlying structures of the human face, are compelling for their revelation of personality, and mysterious evocation of our kinship with other species. I have transformed these scans photographically, in order to stimulate contemplation of what it means to be human, unique as a species yet part of the great chain of being."
Wilfred Spoon was born in Charlotte, NC, in 1960. He received his BFA at East Carolina University in 1982. In 1985, Spoon married and moved to New York City to study painting at Parsons School of Design. There he earned a MFA under the tutelage of Paul Resika, Leland Bell and John Heliker. In 1988, Spoon moved to San Francisco where he continued to develop his painting and began to exhibit his art at Mulligan-Shanoski Gallery. Spoon and his wife, Anne, relocated to Charleston, SC, in March of 1998. His work is showing at Gallery Japaro, in Charleston, SC, as well as Havens Picture Framing, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He is also represented in Charlotte, NC, at Center of the Earth Gallery.
Spoon comments on his work: "My paintings are the result of an attempt to represent reality, not as seen through the eye, but rather as seen through the mind's eye. By being less concerned with the actual appearance of things, I have a greater freedom to manipulate the formal tools of painting: color, drawing, composition, etc. Through the use of these tools, I strive to create a stage for the objects represented to coexist harmoniously with a certain degree of clarity and an element of the unexpected."
