Southern Watercolor Society in Hendersonville, NC

The Southern Watercolor Society will exhibit its 23rd Annual Exhibition in Celebration of the Millennium at the Arts Center of Henderson County, in Hendersonville, NC, Aug. 12 through Sept. 23, 2000. This prestigious traveling exhibit will only be on view in three Southern locations: Houston, TX, Ingram TX and Hendersonville, NC.

The show originated in Houston, TX, part of Watermedia 2000, an ambitious event in celebration of the Millennium - a national affair encompassing nine watercolor societies, including one from Mexico. The Southern Watercolor show then moved to The Hill Country Arts Foundation at Ingram, TX, for its second venue. The Arts Center of Henderson County was selected as the third venue. The Arts Center is honored to have this show visiting Hendersonville and excited about the opportunity of having such a fine exhibit on display for the residents of Henderson County and the region.

We are proud to have Mark Haines, a local artist from Hendersonville, juried into the show and exhibiting his painting entitled The Low Country. Haines is currently represented by the Wickwire Gallery in Hendersonville and works in oils and watercolor. Most of the selected artwork will be for sale with prices ranging from $200. to $4000.

An Opening Reception on Aug. 11 will feature an awards ceremony announced by Edna W. Piersol Windes, President of the Southern Watercolor Society, who will read a review of the awards by the juror, Earnest O. Velardi, Professor Emeritus, California State University, who picked a well-rounded exciting group of 76 paintings.

The Southern Watercolor Society, founded in 1975, is a non-profit corporation formed to elevate the stature of watercolor and educate the public to the significance of watercolor as an important creative permanent painting medium. The corporation is dedicated to the highest aesthetic standards. It is the aim of the organization to further the interests of painters in watercolor/watermedia by its programs and competitive exhibits, and to encourage the study of watercolor by art students and others engaged in watercolor painting.
