August Issue 2000
Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Features Work of Homer Ellertson
Tryon
Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, will host the exhibit, Homer
Ellertson: Retrospective of a Versatile Artist, through Aug.
15.
Except for two paintings - one belonging to the Tryon Fine Arts
Center and another from the Lanier Library - private owners are
lending all the works on display. Some of the drawings, photographs,
charcoals, pastels, watercolors and oil paintings have never before
been publicly shown. Generous collectors from as far away as Colorado
are cooperating, making the show a once-in-a-lifetime chance to
see the full range of Ellertson's artistic versatility.
Homer Ellertson was born in Wisconsin in 1892. He attended the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. There he developed a superb technique and had a chance to interact with leading figures in the art world. New York, during the decade of the First World War, was becoming a major center for new expressions of creativity in all fields of design. Ellertson continued his studies in Paris, then took a job back in New York designing wallpapers, high-style rugs, and fine textiles.
In 1920 he decided to leave commercial design in Manhattan and to devote his talents to fine art. A fellow artist suggested he consider Tryon. Ellertson visited and fell in love immediately with the scenery, the climate, and the people. He spent the rest of his life in Tryon, marrying a local woman, living happily and painting prolifically until his death in 1935 at the early age of 43.
