August Issue 2001
Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, Features Works Focused on the Still Life
Through Aug.18, Hampton III Gallery in Taylors,
SC, is exhibiting still life works. These paintings focus on the
observation of the object.
Included in the show is a collograph entitled Things I Picked
Up on the Way to the Parking Lot by Alta Alberga. This composition
of browns and yellows places ordinary objects and shapes in a
fanciful arrangement. Chair by William Halsey features
a strong, single form. A chair pattern which was used to create
Halsey's earlier chair paintings of the 70's is incorporated into
this painting. The negative spaces are as intricately studied
as the positive image of the chair. Combinations of oranges and
blues play on the surface of the masonite board. A Living Water
by Janusz Zadurowicz could be interpreted as a study of red, using
a vase shape as the subject. The comparison of techniques used
by this Polish artist strikes a similar note with the techniques
used by Charleston native William Halsey, even though the two
artists were separated by 40 years and two continents.
A recent painting by Ed Rice features a simple fig branch. The warm tones of browns and golds create a palette reminiscent of the old masters. This is the first still life painting that Rice has painted since the age of 12. Other paintings in the exhibition include work by Carl Blair, Jeanet Dreskin, Fielding Archer, Bette Lee Coburn, Laura Loe, James Kirby, Tony Saladino, Dave Appleman, Emery Bopp, John Acorn, and Jeri Burdick. Mediums range from mosaics to oils to prints to mixed media.
