August Issue 2001
The Marshall Gallery in Greensboro, NC, Shows Works by Robert Kernodle
Human movement and cosmic destiny are the themes of Robert Kernodle's first solo show entitled, Dynamic Visions, scheduled to be shown at The Marshall Gallery located in Greensboro, NC. The exhibition opens Aug. 23 and continues through Sept. 1, 2001.
The eleven medium-sized paintings of this series use acrylic on canvas to explore moments of motion in the human body as though they are moments of motion in the perpetual dance of the universe. Each painting connects a title to a semi-poetic tag, which Kernodle calls its epitome. Each painting states a slightly different version of his main idea - that essence is preserved, while substance is transformed.
Enabled by what he calls "the primal core
of creativity", Kernodle is an outsider artist who tends
to shun formal training, in favor of "gutting out" results
on his own. His impulses to create come from big motions of the
body that have to be confined to the small motions of drawing.
His efforts, so far, might be described as brute figures with
noticeable control and subdued color, possessed with an elusive
quality which dancers call "lift and projection".
New Art International, an annual publication that showcases
painters and sculptors, describes Kernodle's paintings as "pure
spirits of motion". Another publication, Who's Who,
lists him as a dance educator with an avocation in abstract painting.
Kernodle himself, also a published poet, will tell you that he
is not beholding to any title. He just is. Making money is one
aspect of being. Making art is another. Sometimes he works to
survive. Sometimes he works to thrive. Sometimes the two endeavors
overlap.
