Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Chinese Artists
Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibition of works by artists from Baoding, in the People's Republic of China in the College's Art Gallery, located on CPCC's Central Campus. The exhibit of works by Baoquan Tan and Zhanliang Wu will be on view from Aug. 19 through Sept. 21, 2002. The exhibit is co-sponsored by CPCC and Charlotte Sister Cities.
Baoquan Tan, a nationally known traditional watercolor artist in China is a Professor at the College of Arts, Hebei University. He is a member of China Artist's Association and China's International Calligrapher's Association. In 1999, he was a visiting artist to Iceland for 60 days and in 2000, he won a gold medal in the exhibition Contemporary Chinese Art Works. Two of Tan's paintings are in the collection of the People's Hall, in Beijing, China. His book Flower and Bird Paintings is a well known text book in many art schools in China.
Zhanliang Wu is a master calligrapher in Baoding. He is the General Secretary of Baoding's Calligraphy Association. His calligraphy has been exhibited widely throughout China. In addition, he is an expert on ancient Chinese paintings, porcelain, jade, books, and seals. He has written several books including Study of Buddhist Tablets & Scriptures in the Lotus Pond and is currently working on his next book, "The History of Calligraphy in Hebei (1000-1900AD)" soon to be published.
Baoding has been a Sister City of Charlotte since 1987. It is located in Hebei Province approximately 90 miles West of Beijing. It has been referred to as the Southern Gate to the Capital. This region is rich in natural resources, and blessed with wide variety of agricultural crops. The city is famous for "Baoding balls", small steel balls with chimes on the inside (which are used for therapy).
The artists will give workshops and lectures on traditional Chinese Watercolor and Chinese Calligraphy techniques on the Central Campus of CPCC as well as several of its other campuses. In addition, they will be working in a studio on the Central Campus of CPCC four days per week. When not working in their studio or lecturing/demonstrating, they will be visiting other schools and organizations scheduled by Charlotte Sister Cities.

In addition to the above workshops/lectures which are open to the general public , Tan and Wu will be working in LRC - 076 on CPCC's Central Campus from 10-l2noon and 1pm, Mon.-Thur., from approximately 4pm for students, faculty and staff to observe them work in their studio. Based on availability, interpreters may or may not be available.
