City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Debra Howard
The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of oil on canvas paintings by Mt. Pleasant, SC, artist Debra Howard, Aug. 21 - Sept. 19, 2002, entitled Women of the Lowcountry.
Debra Howard spent her childhood in Miami, FL, where she first discovered her love affair with color, light, painting and sailing. She studied art at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, and began her career in San Francisco, CA, where she opened her first illustration studio. After 17 years as a successful illustrator in various cities, she closed her studio to concentrate on fine art painting. In 1989, she bought her 44 foot sailing sloop, "Ling Ling" and moved aboard. Sailing, art and adventure dominated her life until she adopted her Romanian daughter, Mirela in 1992. After a 3 year hiatus on land "to get the hang of motherhood", Howard and her daughter moved back aboard Ling Ling with their dog Koa. They began cruising for short periods of time, eventually working up to full time cruising.
Howard comments on her work: "Living and traveling on a sailboat, has made me particularly sensitive to my natural surroundings. We are able to see this area in a way that one can never experience from the viewpoint of arriving on land. I am always aware of the weather, the wind direction, tides, light, the natural inhabitants and people of my surroundings. I have grown sensitive to the history and influence of women in the Lowcountry area, particularly African-American women. Everywhere I traveled I was stuck with the powerful, yet understated and even overlooked influence of African women in our present day culture."
