Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05
erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.
Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".
e.r.l. originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works of Three Artists in August
Mixed media paintings on handmade paper by Fritzi Huber, abstract paintings on canvas by Elizabeth Darrow, and Steve Jameson's watercolors of coastal Carolina will be featured at e.r.l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, from Aug. 2-31, 2002.
Fritzi Huber
Fritzi Huber has worked with handmade paper for more than 20 years and is best recognized for her intense use of color and handsomely textured surfaces. She transforms scraps of fabric into pulp, which she "reweaves" into the "canvas" for her paintings. She comes from a long line of circus aerialists and performed with her family. These circus impressions are a constant influence in Huber's handmade paper pieces. The purpose of her work is to convey feelings of romance, fleeting time, emerging light, transition, ongoing change, a holding to the past and a breaking with it. There is a sense of memory emerging like leaves through the frost or stones through the sand.
Huber's art, which has been exhibited across the United States as well as internatIonally, is part of numerous public commissions and collections, among them, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Duke University Medical Center, Bank of America, Litho Industries in Raleigh, IBM's office in Memphis, the Hyatt Regency in both Chicago and San Francisco, Dow Chemical in Houston, the Sheraton International in Chicago, and the Jacksonville Marriott in Jacksonville, FL. Her work is also part of commissions and collections in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Mexico, Finland, and Hungary.
Elizabeth Darrow
Paintings and collages by North Carolina artist Elizabeth Darrow have been featured in numerous publications, including Southern Living and Southern Accents. She has also participated in many invitationals as well as solo, two-person and juried group exhibitions across the state. For her second feature show at e.r.l., Darrow has produced a body of abstract work on canvas, inspired by the paintings of renowned American artist, Jackson Pollock. Paint is applied in a random method, with different colors dripped onto the canvas for a dramatic effect.
Darrow's artwork is part of many collections, among them Mr. And Mrs. David Rockefeller, Jr.; Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC; Duke University Medical Center; R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.; Bank of America; and BB&T. A graduate of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, Darrow also has done independent study at The Barnstone Studios in Coplay, PA.
Steve Jameson's transparent watercolor landscapes feature the Lowcountry salt marshes and old beach houses along the Carolina coast. He also frequently visits South Florida and the Florida Keys where he paints on site, revealing the tropical sunlight in his watercolors. A native of Kentucky, he studied fine art at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Cedar is the name he signs on these watercolors.
Jameson has won numerous awards, including a First Place Award from the Boulder, Colorado, Art Association; an Award of Excellence at the Georgia Watercolor Society Annual National Juried Exhibition; and Patron and Honorable Mention awards from the Sante Fe Trail International Art Exhibit in Trinidad, Colorado, all in 2001. Last year he also received merit awards at the Society of Watercolor Artists Annual National Exhibition; from the Plano, Texas, Watercolor Association; at the Arizona Aqueous Annual National Juried Exhibition; and at the Louisiana Watercolor Society Annual National Juried Exhibition.
Jameson's art is also featured in Dreaming of the Beloved and God Brother, books by Mani Irani, sister of Indian spiritual master Avatar Meher Baba, and Life is a Pair O' Ducks, a semi-animated video production that he produced, wrote and illustrated, featuring 16 fictional stories by Baba. Wodin, a Viking name meaning "fearless warrior," is the name he uses when signing art depicting Baba.
