Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Joan A. Davis
New oil paintings by Charleston artist, Joan A. Davis will be exhibited at the Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, from Aug. 1-31, 2003. The show will include several plein-aire works done during her recent visit to Mexico.
As a landscape painter, Davis is an impressionistic colorist. She attempts to present the most potent image possible through color harmony and invention. The enjoyment of painting light and atmosphere is obvious in her work. The dark, yet colorful shadow patterns contrasted with the strong light, conveys the drama in the painting. These important elements move the eye into and around the canvas. In her vision, a painting should lift the spirit, create an emotional response and please the senses. Davis' love of paintings is part of her being, harmoniously portraying the beauty of nature to share with others.
Davis believes that travel nurtures fresh perspective, giving inspiration and energizing experimentation. She often paints on location using the perfect light and atmosphere for her subject. France, South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan , and Colorado are favorites for "plein aire" painting. Trips to these locations, as well as Greece and Italy, have inspired many paintings in oil and watercolor.
Davis is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University
School of Art, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and a minor
in Art History, Davis also achieved an Associate Degree in Business
Retailing from Harcum College before pursuing her love of painting.
While continuing to study painting, she worked in the interior
design field for ten years. Although she sometimes uses watercolors,
her concentration is oil painting.
Recognition has been awarded to Davis in oils, acrylics, watercolors
and mixed medium in juried competitions. Her work is in private
collections around the world and in commercial institutions.
Davis currently resides in the Charleston area with her husband and their black Labrador retriever.
