Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Hosts Photography Exhibit and Exhibit of Original Illustrations from Popular Children's Books
The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC hosts
Modernism in Photography: The Big Picture and the Hardin Legacy,
a fantastic exhibition on view through Sept. 7, 2003 in the Coe
Gallery and A Carnival of Animals: Beasts, Birds and Bugs in
Original Illustrations from Children's Books in the Shuford
Gallery through Aug. 26, 2003.
Characterized by diversity, the styles and subjects of Modernism
in Photography: The Big Picture and the Hardin Legacy range
from street scenes to portraits. Modernist photography began approximately
1900 and lasted through 1960. The grand evolution of making photographs
look less like paintings and more of an art form is illustrated
in this exhibition. Bold, clear images with strong graphic appeal
highlight these works from such notable artists as Ansel Adams,
Todd Webb, Jay Jaffe, and more. Another outstanding aspect of
this exhibition are the beautiful early 20th century portraits
from the Charles Hardin Studio of Hickory, NC. HMA's visitors
and guests will recognize many of the faces in this collection.
The exhibition, A Carnival of Animals: Beasts, Birds and Bugs in Original Illustrations from Children's Books, features 80 illustrations of a variety of creatures from all seven continents. Famous artists, such as Randolph J. Caldecott, the 19th century illustrator for whom the Caldecott Medal for children's book illustrations is named, created the illustrations. Each of these unique images was selected to show children and adults that illustrations can have both literary and artistic merit.
