August Issue 2003
Hilton Head Art League Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Sale of Masterpieces
Sept. 13, 2003, is the day when you can acquire a "Fabulous Fake" painting of artwork by some of the world's greatest artists. Renoir, Degas, Gauguin, Monet, Picasso, Lautrec, Homer and Vermeer will be available - at way, way, way below the prices at Christie's and Sotheby's. Why? Because they will have been painted in the style of the great masters by local artists. The sale will take place in the Hilton Head Art League Gallery from 11am-4pm and in the surrounding courtyard in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC.
Even more than the appealing prices, are the liberties our artists have taken with the artwork. For example, a painting of Gauguin's Tahitian Women, done by Don Nagel has one of the women sporting a tattoo of Hilton Head Island on her shoulder. In Joyce Nagel's interpretation of Monet's Gare St Lazare, the train has the smiling face of Thomas the Train on the front. Accompanying these two pieces are the stories of these works of art. Apparently, Monet had done eight paintings in a series of this particular train station. Till now only seven had been found. Could this be the missing eighth painting? As for Gauguin's painting in 1891, it is a "little known fact" that the artist had stopped on Hilton Head Island prior to heading for the South Seas. If the paintings are fakes, why not take some liberties with their history as well. It's fun and exciting to identify the works of the great masters and then to spy the little tricks our artists have added to the paintings. All of the fakes are for sale.
More than 38 artists are participating in this event, making this year's Fabulous Fakes the biggest display and sale of art fakes in the history of Hilton Head Island.
During the sale some artists will be painting at easels scattered around Pineland Station. Light refreshments will be served in the gallery and the sound of French music will transform this mall into a US-style Montmartre.
For the flavor of Paris, an art learning experience, and fun for the whole family, the Art League's Fabulous Fakes is the only place to be on Sept. 13.
