Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers a Summer Invitational Exhibit
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will host the exhibition Just Desserts, a summer invitational, through Aug. 30, 2003.
Just Desserts tempts viewers with still life paintings of cakes, cookies, pastries and other artful confections. Participating artists include Beverly Shipko, Gary Bukovnik, Lisa Diller, Daniel Douke, Ralph Goings, Richard Mayberry, Robert Peterson, Tom Pfannerstill, Victor Richardson, Richard Stenhouse, and Wayne Thiebaud. Our enchantment with desserts is universal and has no boundaries, gender, class or age. Each artist approaches this sweet subject from a common ground, yet their interpretations show a personal history, as unique and individual as handmade chocolates.
Contemporary artists have transformed and revitalized the still life genre, bringing new life and a modern eye to what has generally been considered a conservative tradition. Using objects at hand for inspiration, artists translate common, familiar forms into pure visual delights. Nowhere is this more evident than in the paintings on view in Just Desserts.
