Sassafras Southern Bistro in Greenville, SC, Features Works by David M. Starzec
Sassafras Southern Bistro in Greenville, SC,
will host an exhibit of works by Greenville artist, David M. Starzec.
The show entitled, Culinary Hardware, will be on display
through Sept. 2003.
The exhibit features subject matter that focuses on the hardware
elements that regional farmers and fisherman use to harvest the
foods that define our southern food and heritage. One of the mixed
media originals, Scratching & Culling, shows a man
digging for clams on Murrells Inlet, SC. This piece was recently
awarded third place in the Mixed Media category of the 16th
Annual National Juried Art League's Show, held at the Arts
Center of Coastal Carolina in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Additional
titles in the series of 14 large format IRIS prints include Grandpa's
Gear, Grill'n Plants with Thyme, Piedmont Heirlooms and Grey
Court Mud Bugs.
Starzec's style is self-described as "PhotoImpressionism." He first digitally captures the subject matter and then creates a master image that is printed on an IRIS 3047 fine art press. "I then alter the print with water by using a variety of modified paint brushes," added Starzec. "I use quick gesture like strokes when applying the water that give the image an impressionistic feel. After altering the inks, I use a combination of pastel strokes and blending tools. Touches of graphite are added to complete the original mixed media."
This is the second time that Sassafras' owners have commissioned a collection of original mixed media from Starzec. Additionally, Michelin North America commissioned Starzec to create a "PhotoImpression" original of their corporate headquarters on Pelham Road.
