Summit One Gallery in Highlands, NC, Offers Two Exhibitions in August
Summit One Gallery in Highlands, NC, continues
the current exhibition, Paintings of the Song Catcher,
paintings by Elizabeth Ellison; watercolors, acrylics and mixed
media, all pertaining to the Appalachian Mountains. Ellison was
commissioned to create all of the paintings used in the movie
The Song Catcher, a movie about the songs of Appalachia at the
turn of the century. The exhibition will continue through Aug.
27, 2003.
Dotson Adams
Of ART and FUNction will open at Summit One Gallery on Aug. 30, 2003 and be on view through Oct. 1, 2003. Function: a purpose, meaning, role, task or utility. Functional art adds a unique charm and fun to your environment. Donna Woods of Highlands, will be showing a folk art table and chair made with wine corks and other amusing found objects. Rosemary Stiefel, also of Highlands, has designed an incredible rug/wall hanging, perfect for any mountain home; hand woven in Nepal of 100% New Zealand wool. Mary Salome Vandergraft of Durham, NC, creates exquisite hand dyed and constructed silk pillows, banners, scarves and ruanas. Ken Gillen of Sarasota, FL, is a wood craftsman who designs, builds, and finishes extraordinary tables and chairs using exotic and domestic woods. He also custom builds tables and chairs for clients, sometimes the tables are up to eighteen feet long with all the chairs to match.
Charles Roberts of Conyers, GA, is another
wood craftsman. He designs and constructs boxes and trays unparalleled
to any other; having been a featured craftsman at the 2002 American
Craft Council Southeastern Regional Exhibition in Virginia. Deborah
McCorkle of Cashiers, NC, creates art to wear; an accomplished
silversmith, glass bead artist, and jewelry designer. Her turquoise
and Tibetan coral necklaces and bracelets are fun and very much
in vogue. Dodson Adams also of Cashiers, creates art from the
earth. His organic lighting incorporates branches, moss, bark
and more. Expertly designed and constructed to create the ultimate
in recycling. Gay Smith of Bakersville, NC, is a renown potter,
having been publicized in Clay Times, 500 Bowls, Ceramic Monthly,
500 Teapots and more. She creates salt fired functional pottery,
including vases, candle holders, bowls, votives, and baskets.
Marsha Montoya of West Palm Beach, FL, has handcrafted mosaic
boxes with tiles, gem stones, antique jewelry and in addition,
has created for this exhibition an evening purse entirely of gem
stones. Exquisite! Shawn McGreery Geatz of Wilmington, NC, provides
a new take on the function of drinking wine. She paints fun and
whimsical wine glass titled Sea Cups. A must see!!
