Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by William Martin Jean
The Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, is featuring
the exhibition, Unearthed - the Strata Series, featuring
works by William Martin Jeans, through Sept. 21, 2004.
An award-winning American artist and renowned educator, Jean's
decades-long affinity for art history and ancient architecture
continues to characterize his art. His latest work of mixed media
and acrylic on canvas or wood represents his response to pieces
recently coming out of the near east, the "cradle of civilization."
The work beyond the inspiration for his art, two elements
the simplicity of design and subtlety of color have always
held Jean's interest. "Working on the grid, which I did for
many years," Jean said, "provided me with a way of corralling
my creative energies and helped me to focus on a single direction."
About the abstract nature of his work, Jean says, "Abstraction
has always been the only direction with which I have been comfortable
because it seems to let me speak to subjects and ideas for which
realism has no vocabulary."
Jean continues to experiment with textural
surfaces. He observes that some of his earlier grid oriented works
created a kind of texture because of the interaction of linear
patterns or the scraping through layers of paint. "What is
different now," Jean says, "is that the textures have
an organic quality reminiscent of fossilized surfaces or weathered
walls. "In combination with flat passages, these textures
create for me a kind of visual counterpoint, playing against one
another. "I like to feel that the controlled part of the
work sometimes yields to the accidental; that the spontaneous
finds harmony in order."
Jean has been a resident artist at the Silver Fox Gallery since
April 2003.
