August Issue 2004
Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Shannon Smith
Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is
delighted to announce the opening of an exhibition by one of the
most talented and prolific young artists in the Southeast, Shannon
Smith. Her new show, titled Summertime, begins Aug. 13,
and continues through Aug. 28, 2004.
This collection of work, revolving around the spirit of summer,
conveys the artist's love and knowledge of oil painting's classical
elements. Her Summertime collection includes themes such
as travel, life on the water, and the farmers market. Smith's
simple use of brilliant colors in a field of flowers reminds viewers
of the temporality of the seasons. Expounding on the notion of
nostalgia, she captures the essence of how this time of year warms
our thoughts and heightens our senses.
Smith achieves an expression of provisional experience within
each piece. Heavily influenced by the impressionists and the notion
of capturing a moment, she accomplishes this by going beyond the
representation of visual subject matter, revealing the atmospheric
influences of the painted "snapshot." When viewing one
of Smith's paintings it is clear what time of day it is, what
the temperature was, and what smells were in the air.
In the case of Summertime, Smith's show could be described
as peaches, salt air, warmth, and sand between your toes. "The
season of summer makes everything green, ripe, and in full bloom.
Summer skies intrigue me with their ever changing moods...big
white clouds swelling before my eyes are a beautiful warning of
evening thunderstorms to come. Whether it is Charleston, Asheville,
Bermuda, or France, my travels find a universal response to Mother
Nature's climbing temperatures. I admire the simplicity of life
that unites our unique cultures," says Smith.
Upcoming events at the gallery are Jennifer Smith Rogers' next
exhibit opening on Sept, 24, 2004, and Kim English's next show
begins on Nov. 5, 2004 during the 6th CFADA fine art annual weekend.
